South West

Australia's south west is a tapestry region of farm land and vineyards. Its main attractions are the dolphins, forests and of course the award winning food and wine, however the destination also boasts world class surf and dazzling displays of spring wildflowers. The South West enjoys a temperate climate with warm summers around 30-35 degrees and cool winters around 15 degrees. In summer the sunshine and warm weather makes the South West a favorite spot for families and groups of vacationers and in winter the chilly conditions are a perfect excuse for a cosy getaway.

The South West has become famous for it's unique forests and award winning wineries. Around 26% of the countries premium wines are produced in the South West, and there is no shortage of first class wineries to visit. We reccommend The Watershed and Adifern. There is also no shortage of boutique breweries in the region for those with different tastes. Check out some natural wonders when visiting the region. Explore Mammoth Cave and Jewel Cave and learn how the facinating formations evolved. Visit the ancient Valley of the giants in Walpole and walk amongst the giants 38 meters above the forest floor. For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground enjoy the board walk that weaves through the base of the trees. The South West is home to four distinctive tree families, the Karri, Jarrah, Tuart and Tingle. Perhaps you want to challenge yourself to climb the Glouchester tree? At 61 meters high the tree was used as a lookout for fires from 1947, the view from the top is breathtaking, but not for the faint hearted.

Dont forget to pay a visit to the famous Margaret River Chocolate Factory and Cheese Factory. The Chocolate Factory has been producing award winning chocolate since 1999. Enjoy free tastings, interactive displays and some facinating insight to how the chocolate is made. The cheese factory was established in Margaret River in 1990 and has since produced top quality products from fresh local ingredients.   The South West is also a culturally rich destination. Take the opportunity to explore the history of the early settlements with many historic buidings remaining unchanged since the 19th century. The South West has an abundance of historical sites and heratige trails for those looking for a more educational experience. The Aborigional history in the area dates back 50,000 years when it was first settled by the Noongar people, which translates to 'man'. Their culture has been preserved in the South West and is a facinating look at early life in the area.
