Golden Outback

 

For a truly outback the Golden Outback is a must. Here you have the opportunity to experience the charm and character that makes this region unique. Check out the famous Goldfields, thecountry atmosphere, the wheatbelt and the outback way of life on cattle stations of the Gascoyne-Murchison area.                           

                 

The climate in the outback can be harsh. In the south of the region can be bitter cold in the winter months with temperatures dropping to almost zero at night. In the centre and north of the region during the summer months the temperature rises to the mid thirties and conditions are very dry. It isn't uncommon for temperatures to rise above 40 degrees on some days and summers tend to be long, dry and hot, not ideal travelling conditions for those not accustomed to hot weather.      

 

The Golden Outback is the real thing. It is a region that offers a rich history of ghost towns, gold rush experiences and cattle stations. Check out Kalgoorlie, a gold mining town with more character and history than most cities in the region. Experience the history behind the gold rush era on The Gold Quest Discovery Trail which takes you deep into the Goldfields for an authentic experience. With a rich and exiting history dating back to the 1890's, you can even try your hand at prospecting. Visit Broad Arrow, a true Aussie ghost town located 38 kms north of Kalgoorlie, toward Leonora. Established in 1896 it was home to more than 15,000 residents and thriving businesses however by 1920 the town as mysteriously abandoned.

 

For a different experience check out the wheatbelt with its rolling hills, farming towns and country charm. You can experience some real country hospitality with a farm stay, enjoying home cooked foods and unforgettable farm life activities. One of the biggest Golden Outback attractions is Wave Rock in Hyden. This iconic natural feature is an awe-inspiring sight and draws thousands of tourists a year. The Golden Outback comes alive in spring and summre when the wildflowers flood the region. The region is renowned for the annual transformation of sensational colour and contrast.                             

 

Since the late 1800's the Golden Outbackhas developed a rich and exiting history. From the character of the Kalgoorlie pubs, the natural wonders of wave rock, to the Aborigional site Mulka's Cave located 18 kms north of Hyden. Inside the cave you can view well preserved examples of art in the form of hand outlines. This provides an interesting insight to Aborigional heritage in the area and the areas earliest inhabitants and folklore.
